"How do I put/upload my website on your servers, or, how do I "FTP" my files? |
ANSWER most importantly, unless otherwise instructed, you should be uploading your normal website pages to the folder on the server called public_html. Do not modify or remove folders that were put there by us or it might break your site. Use a free FTP program. There are many available such as CoreFTP and SmartFTP.. In fact IE (Internet Explorer) even has it built in ! Check out Microsoft's website to learn how to use IE to FTP.

"How do I edit my website (make changes)?" |
ANSWER 1. Option 1: Hire us to do it for you. 2. Option 2: Learn HTML. There are at least a googol websites out there where you can learn HTML. As you will find out in the tutorials, you can edit/create HTML with notepad, or you can use expensive software like Macromedia DreamWeaver (or Adobe GoLive), or FrontPage by Microsoft which is much less expensive, but Front Page tends to make websites look bad, or mess them up. If you just need a quick reference guide, or quickly learn HTML, then I am a fan of a site called HTML dog. (look under "Guides" in the top left corner). Not everything can be done with HTML. When you need to do things that are dynamic, then you need something like PHP or JavaScript--this is probably where you may want to consider hiring us (HTML is fairly easy, but other languages are not). To edit your website, there are many ways to do this, besides using good, old-fashion notepad, there are countless, powerful programs out there. Here are just some of the most popular: FREE SOFTWARE:

"Nameservers: How do I set my website to point to your hosting?" |
ANSWER WARNING: If you are transferring your website from another hosting company, to us, then in order to make a seamless transfer, you will want to be sure your website is on our servers first; test it to make sure it works, and THEN change the nameservers. You can contact your domain name provider (e.g. GoDaddy, NetworkSolutions, Register.com, etc...) and they will help you do this step. If we happen to control your domain (meaning we registered it for you), then you can ask us to point the nameservers for you. This is the necessary informaion: NS1.MYTECHSUPPORT.COM If it asks for more than 2 nameservers, you can ignore those. It typically takes between 24 and 48 hours for every computer in the world to see the website, whenever you change the nameservers (technically called DNS propagation); so, if you plan to launch your website on a certain date, you will want to update the name servers at least a couple days in advance.

"How do I setup DreamWeaver, FrontPage, or other website editor?" |
ANSWER We recommed using the setup guide / help manual. Although we cannot truely support other people's software (for free that is), we have potsed some basic instructions for the following:
|
"How do I upload, or publish pages with FrontPage ?" |
ANSWER You have two choices with FrontPage: You can either "publish" or "drag-and-drop" files. If you want to use the Publish feature in Frontpage, then your local copy of the site needs to be in a folder called: public_html For example, your home page, contact page, etc., should all be contained within a folder on your computer called public_html If you prefer just to drag-and-drop files from your comptuer to the server (e.g. click on a file in your local view, drag it over to the remote view, or server), then you can do that too. Just be sure you drag them to your public_html folder on the server, just like you would with any other program. |
"I am unable to FTP" |
ANSWER This is usually caused by one of the following.
A. Incorrect FTP settings If you have successfully used FTP in the past, and now it suddenly stopped working, then this is the most likely answer. Of course we already assume you have re-entered your FTP username and password to be sure. If you think someone might have changed your username and password, you may want to call us to reset your FTP information to be sure.
B. Your FTP ports are blocked by a firewall Programs like McAfee and Norton have aggressive firewalls that block everything. Look in the program settings and go to the section for ports, and add ports 21 and 22 (since adding the FTP program to the allowed programs list is usually not sufficient by itself). Disable the firewall if it continues to give you problems. C. Incorrect root folder (a.k.a. host directory) If you are using a program like dreamweaver, you may want to try to set the "Host Directory" to: /public_html/
D. Incorrect host If we are not hosting your site yet (e.g. you have not set the nameserver in your registrar to point to our servers), and you are uploading files to the temporary directory we have provided you, then the host must be set to mytechsupport.com

"FrontPage questions: I keep getting errors when I try to use FrontPage; do you support FrontPage (or FrontPage extensions)" |
ANSWER FrontPage works on both our Windows, and Unix hosting plans; however, if you are using it on our Unix hosting plan, then you may have to do some additional setup. Most of our customers use our Unix hosting, so this probably applies to you. It is easy to tell.
Since we no longer support Microsoft's FrontPage Extensions on our Unix (FreeBSD) hosting plans (they are insecure & unstable) you just need to disable a couple relatively useless features in FrontPage—I repeat, rather useless as Microsoft points out here. As mentioned in other how-to articles, you may want to instead of using FrontPage as your website editor, consider using a different, and better website editor altogether. I have heard that FrontPage 2003 is much improved from previous versions. Just click on the version of FrontPage you are using to learn how to make your FrontPage work on our Unix servers:
Microsoft and its partners no longer offer FrontPage extensions for Unix—they are permanently discontinued, partly because they are outdated, not to mention they can cause serious security issues on Unix, as well as many stability problems.
