DreamWeaver Setup

This guide is written for DreamWeaver 8 users, although it may also work for DreamWeaver MX (2004) users as well.

Step 1:

Setup a new Site.
  • Make sure you are on the tab that says Basic.
  • It does not matter what you name your site; it is just what you will see in DreamWeaver.
  • The "Http address (URL) of your site" is just your main website address.
  • Click Next

Step 2:

Click Next again; just leaving it set to "No, I do not want to use a server technology"

Step 3:

  • Again, leave the default settings of "Edit local copies on my machine...".
  • For the setting "Where on your computer do you want to store your files?", you can also leave that set to the default, or change it if desired. Basically, whenever you edit your website with DreamWeaver, it copies the file from your website, on to your personal computer, and when it's done, it uploads it back up to your website*.
  • Click Next

Step 4:

  • For the setting, "How do you connect to your remote server, change it to say FTP.
  • The hostname is just your website address.
  • Leave the next line (about the default folder) blank.
  • For the username and password, use your FTP username and password.
    • This was issued to you when you began hosting with us, so if you lost it, please contact us.
  • Unless we instruct you otherwise, the "Use Secure FTP" box should be left unchecked.
  • Click Next

Step 5:

On this step it will ask you about check-in and check-out. You can leave it set to whatever is default, but you can read the Dreamweaver manual if you think it might be useful to you. Click Next

Step 6:

Just click Done and you will be finished.

Important note about uploading using DreamWeaver One of the challenges with DreamWeaver is in the fact that it makes a local copy on your comptuer. The problem is that if a web design company (such as ourselves) decides to edit a page on your website, you might not have downloaded it since the change, so when you go to upload your files, you overwrite the changes made by your web designer. By default, unless you use the wrong settings, DreamWeaver does give you warnings if you are about to overwrite a page on the website that is newer than your own. When in doubt, use the "Syncronize" sitewide feature in DreamWeaver, updating get/put anything newer. Read the Dreamweaver manual for more help on this topic. We cannot be responsible for any changes you make that overwrite any newer changes on your website.
